The Incredible Art of Dr. Snowflake / Wassenberg Art Center / 1 - 5 PM
Five years ago the Wassenberg Art Center exhibited the incredible art of Dr. Snowflake. Hundreds of people came, saw and were astonished at the delicately cut paper snowflakes that told stories, illustrated Bible verses, and had hundreds of hidden silhouettes that brought people back to look, and look again. Now he returns with a whole new array of paper snowflakes. These are not ordinary paper snowflakes. Dr. Snowflake (Thomas Clark MD of Ann Arbor, Mich.) uses precision tools – many of which he has made himself – to cut tiny, detailed silhouettes into lacy paper snowflakes. His work has been exhibited all over Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan, including the prestigious Toledo Museum of Art. Some of his holiday-themed snowflakes have been reproduced in metal and sold on QVC as Christmas ornaments. This free exhibit is sponsored by First Federal Savings & Loan, and Time Warner Cable. For more information you can call the Art Center at 419-238-6837.

When circumstances put them together on a TV show called The Kitchen Witches, the insults are flung harder than the food. Trying to keep them on track is a losing battle, but the show becomes a ratings smash that tops both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer. Steel Magnolias / Van Wert Civic Theatre / 8 PM
The Van Wert Civic Theatre is celebrating its Golden Anniversary season by bringing back to the stage a number of popular shows from the past. Steel Magnolias was previously performed on the Van Wert Civic Theatre stage in 1990. The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser; an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby, is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength - and love - which gives the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them a truly touching, funny, and marvelously genial company in good times and bad.
For ticket information contact the box office at 419-238-9689.

Under the direction of James' lead trumpet virtuoso, Fred Radke, the Harry James Orchestra continues the tradition of mellow arrangements and fine rhythmic playing that first made it famous. "America" In Concert / Niswonger Performing Arts Center / 7:30 PM
The world discovered America in 1972, when a nameless horse began its gallop across the international airwaves. "A Horse With No Name" made the band called America famous in the United States, Europe and beyond, leading the way for an impressive string of hits to follow. America returned to the upper reaches of the Pop chart in 1982 with "You Can Do Magic" and brought their live show to audiences in new corners of the globe. Their box set, "Highway," released in 2000, captures the highlights of where their music has carried them and chronicles the changes they've gone through both artistically and personally. And change, of course, has always been a very American quality. This concert is sponsored in part by WLIO Lima, The Times Bulletin, and Van Wert Federal Savings Bank. The Van Wert Civic Theatre is celebrating its Golden Anniversary season by bringing back to the stage a number of popular shows from the past. For the final production of the 2008-2009 season, the Theatre will present The Odd Couple, previously performed in 1968. This classic comedy opens as a group of guys assemble for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been separated from his wife. Since he is very fastidious and none too tense, they fear he might commit suicide and go about locking all the windows. When Felix arrives, he is scarcely allowed to go to the bathroom alone. As the action unfolds, the clean-freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born. For ticket information contact the box office at 419-238-9689.
